Creative collaboration teaches me to be open to new ways of working and try different things. Without my collaborator Vic, I would not have tried rear projecting onto to shade cloths on windows, using windows panes as photographic frames nor would I have projected strips of vertical images on a fly screen door. Nor would I have a videowork inside an old combustion heater, nor project images onto a blackboard.
He changed his mind at the eleventh hour about a soundscape he was creating for the foyer – the entrance to the school room. We had agreed earlier that this area was to have an old radiogram playing a newly created version of old time radio program, which the former students said they remembered listening to. We are now installing music created by sounds made by the Old Birrego School, much like what we had done with the children from the Boree Creek Public School.
A successful collaboration is based on trust. To feel safe with each other allows us to make richer work we would not have otherwise.
I would not have started this blog without Vic’s suggestion to do so.
